Weekly Reflections #10

In which we attempt to not freak out about AI.

Sometimes when it’s been, you know, a day, I like to sit down with some chips, a diet coke, my phone, and turn the tv on. It’s this sort of complete sensory overload where my brain and body get so much input that it dulls everything and slows my mind down. I’m not proud of this, as someone who commonly advocates for doing one thing at a time, but it soothes me in a dangerous way.

That’s what listening to 10,000 Gecs, by the band 100 Gecs, feels like. What do they sound like? If you reimagined 20 year-old pop songs, but on ketamine (I’ve never done ketamine). They’re the logical successors to Ween, but they don’t sound like Ween, they sound like if you asked Chat GPT to create a modern version of Ween.

I both like most of these songs and hate most of these songs, and I don’t really know how to feel about it. “Dumbest Girl Alive” is a total jam, and I like “Hollywood Baby” as well. But they follow that up with “Frog on the Floor,” and the best thing that song has going for it is that I don’t think it’s even a metaphor (sample lyric: He’s been chillin’ in the basement for a minute / I just think it’s time we moved into the kitchen / Give him some space, and let him do his thing / Make him feel safe, and listen to him sing). Like…what the fuck is going on here?

The genius annotations for this song are perfect. Lyric: Flog on the floor. Annotation: theres a frog on the flor [sic]

The next song is called Doritos & Fritos, the bass sounds like it’s pulled directly from Seinfeld, and, well, the song is about eating Doritos and Fritos. I don’t like this song, but I appreciate the reference to MF Doom’s “Accordion” (“get more cheese than Doritos Cheetos or Fritos”).

I could keep going here, we could analyze each song, but I think my brain would explode. This album is just under 27 minutes, and honestly that’s as long as should be allowed under federal law. More of this and I might become a happy vegetable sitting on the couch, happily singing “I Got My Tooth Removed!”
